Le Jour des Oies Sauvages en France

On Thursday the 31st August this year, (le Jour des Oies Sauvages en France) , Cremona Heritage participated in a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe, conducted by the French military, with participation from the Irish Ambassador to France Niall Burgess, the French Ambassador to Ireland Vincent Guérend, members of the 92nd Infantry regiment and two descendants of Theobald Wolfe Tone. The ceremony commemorated, for the first time at the Arc de Triomphe, the many Irish, mostly unknown, who died in the service of France, from the 17th century and later notably those of the Brigade Irlandaise and of Napoleon’s Légion Irlandaise. The ceremony began with the laying of wreaths and culminated with a flaring of the eternal flame, undertaken together by both Ambassadors with a descendant of Wolfe Tone.

The very moving ceremony, as expressed by HE Niall Burgess will live long in  the memory, a very poignant reminder, on the anniversary of the formation by Napoleon of his Légion Irlandaise, of the enduring bonds between Ireland and France over the centuries. le Jour des Oies Sauvages en France (JOSEF) to become an annual day each August 31st.
