About

Cremona Heritage

The historic Cremona townland with its house and gardens is an evolving venue, celebrating long standing French Irish connections from the 16th to the 19th centuries, notably in La Brigade Irlandaise and later, Napoleon’s Irish Legion. Cremona also embraces other storied military formations of Irish Emigrés from the Tercio Irlandes of 1587 up to the Irish Transvaal Brigade of 1899.

Cremona was so named in the 19th century by an officer returning from Napoleon’s Irish Legion, to honour a famous victory by La Brigade Irlandaise who liberated the city of Cremona in Italy from Austrian forces in 1702.

The Cremona LegionÉire Dance

The Cremona LegionÉire Dance Force combine Irish dancing uniquely to European classical and 19th century march music, such as Beethoven’s Yorkscher Marsch, Winter from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the French March of Saint Cyr and to the Ukrainian Vesnyanka. This Troupe of professional Irish dancers, pay homage to La Légion Irlandaise of Napoleon’s Grande Arnée and other historical formations of Irish exiles around the world, from the 16th to the 19th century. The dancers wear replica uniforms as originally worn by the Irish Legion infantry of La Légion in the colours of old Ireland, green and gold.

An Officer of Napoleon’s….

The House and Gatelodge in the townland of Cremona were built in the late 18th century and originally named ‘Foxhall’. Foxhall was on the road to the now lost village of ‘Furrows’ which later became known as ‘Forest’ Road.

Cremona was so named in the 19th century by an officer returning from Napoleon’s Irish Legion, to honour a famous victory by La Brigade Irlandaise who liberated the city of Cremona in Italy from Austrian forces in 1702.

Cremona in north Dublin continues to celebrate strong bonds with France and with the descendants of the ‘Wild Geese’ now scattered to the four winds from the 16th century onwards.
